Correspondence of Arthur S. Nesmith primarily during the period that Nesmith served in the First and Third New Hampshire Regiments during the Civil War. Also included are letters relating to his service as a quartermaster for the United States Volunteers in Washington, DC, where he was responsible for the fortifications surrounding the city. Among the correspondents are his brother and sister, George Brooks Nesmith and Annie Nesmit, his wife Mary Moulder Nesmith, and his parents George Washington and Mary M. Nesmith. Some correspondence relates to his brother George's days as a student at Dartmouth in the Class of 1854 and his father's tenure as a Trustee of the College.

The New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was established in 1866 in Hanover, NH and affiliated with Dartmouth College. Problems arouse in the relationship between the two schools and it became necessary to explore alternatives for the agricultural college.
